Ask Debbie: Should I Get Back With My Ex?
- Posted on July 4th, 2007 in Ask Debbie
My ex and I have been apart for about 7 months. We still see each other, because we have a child together. I know we both care about each other - but the reason
why we aren’t together is a big deal.
I really miss him and want him back regardless of what happened in the past, but he has a new girlfriend now. I feel like he doesn’t really care about their relationship, but I’m afraid to tell him that I want him back. I think he might already know that I want him back. I also know that he doesn’t want to be associated with my parents.
What should I do?

Dear Confused,
Thank you for your question. Your situation is not an easy one, whenever there is a child involved things get much more complicated. The fact that you and your ex still care about each other is a good thing. When your child sees you and your ex treating each other with respect – your child will feel safe and loved, which should be the most important thing for both of you.
As for what you should do, it sounds like you already know the answer. Read some of the things you said to me in your letter: you broke up for a major reason, he has a new girlfriend, he doesn’t want anything to do with your family, and he already knows that you want him back but isn’t doing anything about it.
Your question holds your answer – let him go. If he’s showing you through his actions that he doesn’t want to be with you, then you should listen to him. Of course you still need to maintain a positive relationship with him for your child, which might be painful at first.
This can be difficult to hear, but if you see the situation for what it is and not for what you want it to be, you’ll be much happier.
Spend your energy focusing on the good things you what you want for you and your child. In time you’ll find someone that can treat you with the love and respect you deserve.
